Switchfoot Unplugged
Life Gets in the Way!
Well, I haven’t been very consistent on here for quite a while. Sorry about that. It appears that there are about 15-20 die-hard faithful readers who continue to visit. Thanks! I’ll try to do better.
Recently, I was able to see Switchfoot (or part of them) at an unplugged concert. It was great!
The Blues
Of late this has been a song that I have enjoyed listening to. It seems sad, and somehow hopeful at the same time.
“It’ll be a day like this one
When the sky falls down and the hungry and poor and deserted are found”
“The Blues”
Is this the New Year or just another night?
Is this the new fear or just another fright?
Is this the new tear or just another desperation?
Is this the finger or just another fist?
Is this the kingdom or just a hit n’ miss?
A misdirection, most in all this desperation
Is this what they call freedom?
Is this what you call pain?
Is this what they call discontented fame?
It’ll be a day like this one
When the world caves in
When the world caves in
When the world caves in
I’m singing this one like a broken piece of glass
From broken arms an’ broken noses in the back
Is this the New Year or just another desperation?
You’re pushing till you’re shoving
You bend until you break
Till you stand on the broken fields where our fathers lay
It’ll be a day like this one
When the world caves in
When the world caves in
When the world caves in
When the world caves in
When the world caves in
When the world caves in
There’s nothing here worth saving,
Is no one here at all?
Is there any net left that could break our fall?
It’ll be a day like this one
When the sky falls down and the hungry and poor and deserted are found
Are you discontented? Have you been pushing hard?
Have you been throwing down this broken house of cards?
It’ll be a day like this one
When the world caves in
When the world caves in
When the world caves in
Is there nothing left now?
Nothing left to sing
Are there any left who hasn’t kiss the enemy?
Is this the New Year or just another desperation?
Does justice never find you? Do the wicked never lose?
Is there any honest song to sing besides these blues?
And nothing is okay
Till the world caves in
Till the world caves in
Till the world caves in
Till the world caves in
Till the world caves in
Until the world caves in
Until the world caves in
Until the world caves in
Until the world caves in
Until the world caves in
Until the world caves in

Awakening
Here’s a cool new video from Switchfoot’s, Oh, Gravity! album. Some pretty big things have happened recently in my life. I don’t know where God is taking me, but I feel more “awake” than I have in a long time. So this line from the song resonates:
“And in all my life I don’t know if I’ve ever felt so alive, alive”
Awakening
Face down with the LA curbside endings
With the ones and zeros.
Downtown was the perfect place to hide.
The first star that I saw last night was a headlight
Of a man-made sky, but man- made never made our dreams collide,
Collide.
Here we are now with the falling sky and the rain,
We’re awakening
Here we are now with our desperate youth and the pain,
We’re awakening
Maybe it’s called ambition, you’ve been talking in your sleep
About a dream, we’re awakening
Last week found me living for nothing but deadlines,
With my dead beat sky but, this town doesn’t look the same tonight
These dreams started singing to me out of nowhere
And in all my life I don’t know if I’ve ever felt so alive,
Alive
I want to wake up kicking and screaming
I want to wake up kicking and screaming
I want a heart that I know is beating,
It’s beating,
I’m bleeding
I want to wake up kicking and screaming
I want to live like I know what I’m leaving
I want a heart that I know is beating,
It’s beating… it’s beating…
I’m bleeding

Shadow proves the Sunshine
I love this song. It describes so much of where I am and the feeling that things just aren’t the way they are supposed to be. I could wonder, “where is God in all this” when the trouble seems so big, but then if the trouble is the shadow of something out of place, something that is blocking the sun, well, that tells me where God is. He’s where He is supposed to be.
Isn’t the fact that I can judge that there is something wrong the same as seeing the shadow and the light that reveals it?
O, Shine on me!
The Shadow Proves The Sunshine
by Switchfoot
Sunshine, won’t you be my mother
Sunshine, come and help me sing
My heart is darker than these oceans
My heart is frozen underneath
We are crooked souls trying to stay up straight,
Dry eyes in the pouring rain
The shadow proves the sunshine
The shadow proves the sunshine
Two scared little runaways
Hold fast to the break of day light where
The shadow proves the sunshine
Oh Lord, why did you forsake me?
Oh Lord, don’t be far away away
Storm clouds gathering beside me
Please Lord, don’t look the other way
Crooked souls trying to stay up straight
Dry eyes in the pouring rain
The shadow proves the sunshine
The shadow proves the sunshine
Two scared little runaways
Hold fast to the break of day light were
The shadow proves the sunshine
The shadow proves the sunshine
Yeah Yeah, shine on me
Crooked souls trying to stay up straight
Dry eyes in the pouring rain
The shadow proves the sunshine
The shadow proves the sunshine
Two scared little runaways
Hold fast to the break of day light were
The shadow proves the sunshine
The shadow proves the sunshine
Yeah Yeah, shine on me
Shine on me,
Let my shadows prove the sunshine
Scream for Second Life!
I love this song! Have you ever felt that there just had to be more to life than what we see?
Fumbling his confidence
And wondering why the world has passed him by
Hoping that he’s meant for more than arguments
And failed attempts to fly, fly
We were meant to live for so much more
Have we lost ourselves?
Somewhere we live inside
Dreaming about Providence
And whether mice or men have second tries
Maybe we’ve been living with our eyes half open
Maybe we’re bent and broken, broken
We want more than this world’s got to offer
We want more than this world’s got to offer
We want more than the wars of our fathers
And everything inside screams for second life, yeah
We were meant to live for so much more
Have we lost ourselves?
We were meant to live for so much more
Have we lost ourselves?
We were meant to live for so much more
Have we lost ourselves?
We were meant to live
We were meant to live
dare you to move
I have really been enjoying this song of late. Great reminder that the answer to our biggest problem is forgiveness. We can’t give it to ourselves. But there is someone who offers it right where we need it.
“I Dare You To Move” by Switchfoot
“Welcome to the planet
Welcome to existence
Everyone’s here
Everyone’s here
Everybody’s watching you now
Everybody waits for you now
What happens next?
I dare you to move
I dare you to move
I dare you to lift yourself up off the floor
I dare you to move
I dare you to move
Like today never happened
Today never happened before
Welcome to the fallout
Welcome to resistance
The tension is here
Between who you are and who you could be
Between how it is and how it should be
I dare you to move
I dare you to lift yourself up off the floor
I dare you to move
I dare you to move
Like today never happened”
Maybe redemption has stories to tell
maybe forgiveness is right where you fell
Where can you run to escape from yourself?
Where you gonna go?
Where you gonna go?
Salvation is here
I dare you to move
I dare you to lift yourself up off the floor
I dare you to move
I dare you to move
Like today never happened”
