Modern Rarity

Modern Rarity

I’ve been hoping I…
I’ve been whispering
I’ve been praying for
a true friend to keep

yeah but I know it’s been a
while since two came
and wrapped it up with
will and reason
I agree,
it’s a modern rarity

thanks for being open
thanks for holding on
thanks to everybody
who’s opened up their arms

thanks for being my friend
don’t wanna let you down
but I’ll fade
away

yeah but I know it’s been a
while since two came
and wrapped it up with
will and reason
I agree,
it’s a modern rarity

thanks for being open
thanks for holding on
thanks to everybody
who’s opened up their arms

thanks for being able
when no one’s got a clue
as to what it feels like
to own my solitude

thanks for being my friend
I know you’re true
thanks to everybody I
value
you…I do….
I do
I do
yeah

thanks for being open
thanks for holding on
thanks to everybody
who’s opened up their arms

thanks for being able
when no one’s got a clue
as to what it feels like
to own my solitude
yeah…oh oh oh….

Surrounded by Grace

Berries in SnowThis morning the clouds are lifted. There is hope and a hint of joy for what the future could hold. I am thankful for a new day.

It is a powerful force this thing called grace. It reaches deep into the soul to heal. And I am thankful! So thankful!

Yet, I am filled with regret knowing it comes with a price. For those who are extending grace to me, it costs something to forgive me. And there is the cost of consequence which asks for more grace. I know that the price is paid willingly, and I am thankful, eternally thankful!

What once was hurt
What once was friction
What left a mark
No longer stings
Because Grace makes beauty
Out of ugly things

Grace makes beauty out of ugly things

Beauty of Adventure

“That’s the beauty of adventure
The trembling and the dread
Oh I can’t think of another thing I’d rather do instead
Perhaps you could join us?”

Things That Make Me Happy

Recently, my office team was studying the book of Ecclesiastes. Solomon, who wrote the book, recommends that we should enjoy life. We were challenged to think of things that make us happy.

So here’s my list:Vanilla
Relaxed time alone with my wife
Telling stories with my kids
Reading books with my kids
Giving gifts to people I care about
Getting Text Messages from friends for no good reason
Coke Zero
French Vanilla Ice Cream
Cooking on the grill
Hearing my kids say cute things
Watching a good movie
Reading a good book
Helping others
Singing and Playing Guitar
Pretty Pictures

Doubly Thankful

In a letter to his son, Michael, J. R. R. Tolkien wrote this:

“Nearly all marriages, even happy ones, are mistakes: in the sense that almost certainly (in a more perfect world, or even with a little more care in this very imperfect one) both partners might be found more suitable mates. But the real soul-mate is the one you are actually married to.”

March 1941

I am thankful for my soul mate!

Satisfying Story

Permanent Things had one of my favorite quotes from Tolkien today.

I remember the first time I read The Lord of the Rings. In The Return of the King, after the battle of Pelinor fields, Faramir and Eowyn meet during their convalescence. It struck me as a pleasing thought that they should meet, but even more pleasant was the moment, when they are walking in the garden and Faramir says:

“I love you. I used to pity your sorrow. But now, were you sorrowless, without fear or any lack, still I would love you.”

It’s such a satisfying thought, that they should find one another. Each has fallen victim to darkness that had overtaken their lands and each had suffered such great loss. Perhaps, I am a bit of a romantic, but it is such an encouraging thought that they should be there to comfort one another, but even more, that such comfort would grow to true and deep love.
