Thankful for the Hope of Heaven

It’s been a really tough year, as you can guess from many of the posts here. But this Thanksgiving I am reminded that I have so many things for which to be thankful. God has blessed me with a wonderful family, and some good friends. But mostly I am thankful that this world is not all we have to look forward to. I am thankful that Jesus has taken my sin and given me his righteousness. I am thankful that God has given us a love that knows no bounds!

I was just listening to this song by Rich Mullins today, and it made me feel very thankful for God’s unfailing love.

A Love that Knows No Bounds
by Rich Mullins

Deep calls to deep
And all that we need
Has been lost in what we’ve found
And all we shall be
Is growing by leaps
In a love that knows no bounds

And we will rise on spirit wings
When we wake from earthen dreams

Time ticks away
Night after day
‘Til the clock comes unwound
With all we shall be
Still growing by leaps
In a love that knows no bounds

And we will wake from earthen dreams
To rise on spirit wings

Some Things Never Change

“It appears we have appointed our worst generals to command forces, and our most gifted and brilliant to edit newspapers! In fact, I discovered by reading newspapers that these editor/geniuses plainly saw all my strategic defects from the start, yet failed to inform me until it was too late. Accordingly, I’m readily willing to yield my command to these obviously superior intellects, and I’ll, in turn, do my best for the Cause by writing editorials – after the fact.”

Slap the Face . . .

Recently listening to the lyrics of an older rock band that has been one of my favorites for many years, the 77’s. From the “Sticks and Stones” album, the song, “Days to Come has been particularly meaningful the last few days.

Something tells me that we’ll come out of this
With a healing compassion or a scarring bitterness
Don’t revive painful times, let them rest
Don’t drag a net through the sea of forgetfulness

The cut was deep, the blood was warm
I can’t deny what it’s done
But if we don’t release the past
We’ll slap the face of the days to come

There’s a hand at the door refusing to leave
Its pulse is throbbing, its heart on its sleeve
It’s a new tomorrow waiting to be received
By somebody ready and willing to believe

The cut was deep, the blood was warm
I can’t deny what it’s done
But if we don’t release the past
We’ll slap the face of the days to come

Remember this melody
Don’t ever let it go away
Sing it to your heart
Day after day after day

The cut was deep, the blood was warm
I can’t deny what it’s done
But if we don’t release the past
We’ll slap the face of the days to come

I Will Not Fear

Isaiah 41:10 personalized.

“I will not fear, for you God are with me; I will not be dismayed, for You are my God. You will strengthen me and help me; You will uphold me with your righteous right hand.”

What Happened to the coming Ice Age?

I get so sick of being told what to think. I am not a news junkie by any means, but not a day goes by that I am not confronted with the popular notion of “Global Warming.” I know I am swimming upstream here, but I seriously doubt that we have a global warming problem, but I’m not a scientist, so I will remain open on the question, unlike our Al Gore. (Just for the record, in case you didn’t know, he’s not a scientist either, even if he did create the internet).

So why am I writing about this? Well, the other day my son (he’s 11) asked me about global warming. Naturally, he is a little concerned for his future and the state the planet will be in when he grows up. I just laughed. Him asking me about it, suddenly reminded me of when I was a boy, exactly his age, being concerned for the future of the planet when I grew up. Only, as I was remembering (granted it was thirty years ago), I had visions of the North American continent buried in snow and ice. You see, when I was 10, everyone was concerned that we were entering another ice age. They quoted all kinds of scientists who sounded very convincing, just like today. So, today, I looked it up.

Here is a link to a reprint of a Time magazine article, “Another Ice Age” published June 24, 1974

Here is a link to a .pdf of the same article.

Here is an editorial by a guy named Andrew Kenny, writing for the Sunday Mail in 2002. He says this at one point:

“As recently as January 1994, the supreme authority on matters environmental, Time magazine, wrote:
‘The ice age cometh? Last week’s big chill was a reminder that the Earth’s climate can change at any time … The last (ice age) ended 10,000 years ago; the next one— for there will be a next on—could start tens of thousands of years from now. Or tens of years. Or it may have already started.”

So, I am satisfied that my memory is correct.

So what did I tell my son? I just laughed and said, “You know when I was your age they were afraid we were going into a new ice age. Don’t worry about it. The people who are promoting the global warming scare, want to scare you into giving up some of your freedom. Just be careful what you listen to, and wait til you understand their agenda before you buy into something.” So now we get a good laugh when we hear someone talking about global warming.

On the other hand, we could discover new evidence of global warming anytime, so I’ll keep an open mind. In fact, just the other day, I saw an alarming trend that almost made me a believer. The photo below is the most convincing evidence that the climate is changing.

Lego Man Rescue

I found this great news article on Reuters about a Giant Lego man that washed ashore in Netherlands. The article doesn’t suggest foul play, so there is likely a giant Lego cruise ship out there with a giant Lego woman mourning the loss of her husband.

Next to you

I heard this song recently. It’s what I wish I had written for the love of my life.

Tim Easton
“Next To You”

Let me be next to you
I want to understand
Let me be next to you
Then we can watch the band
Let me be next to you
Under your ceiling fan
I can hear every song better
When I’m next to you

Please don’t pull
All of the stops out on me
And think you’ve been cheated
I’ve laid some bad things down before
I heard the sound of your voice
And you drowned out all the noise
I made ’til now

So let me be next to you
I want to understand
Let me be next to you
Then we can watch the band
Let me be next to you
Under your ceiling fan
I can hear every note better
When I’m next to you

I wanna wake up singing
Every word you said
Do you understand

Please don’t pull
All of the stops out on me
But when you think you’ve been cheated
I know i’ve laid some bad things down before
I heard the sound of your voice
And you drowned all the noise I made ’til now

So let me be next to you
I want to understand
Let me be next to you
Then we can watch the band
Let me be next to you
Under your ceiling fan
I can hear every song better
When I’m next to you
Under your ceiling fan
I can hear everything better
Next to you

Let me be next to you
Let me be next to you
Please let me be right next to you

Life Gets in the Way!

Well, I haven’t been very consistent on here for quite a while. Sorry about that. It appears that there are about 15-20 die-hard faithful readers who continue to visit. Thanks! I’ll try to do better.

Recently, I was able to see Switchfoot (or part of them) at an unplugged concert. It was great!

Here’s a photo.
